Psoriasis is a chronic disease where red, iritated patches of skin ("erythematous papules") coalesce to form plaques with distinct borders. The location varies, but is most typically on the knees, elbows, scalp, umbilicus, and genitalia. In time, left untreated, a silvery yellow-white scale forms. The disease is seldom life-threatening; in fact, better than 50% never experience prolonged remissions, but those that do deal with issues of aesthetics, inconvenience and occasional pain not unlike the herpes sufferer. In about 5% of psoriasis cases, arthritis develops, and in the majority of these, joint involvement will occur at the onset of the skin lesions. Except for the inflammation itself, most of the changes in skin color and appearance are based on the rapid turnover of epidermal cells. Normal skin produces roughly 1250 cells a day per square centimeter from 27,000 pre-existing cells; psoriatic skin creates 35,000 new cells per square centimeter from 52,000 cells each day. Normal duration of the cell cycle is 311 hours, but this is reduced to 36 hours for psoriatic skin. The cause is unknown, but genetics plays a role. Certain events can induce or aggravate an outbreak: certain drugs, infection, change of climate, smoking, and hormonal changes). Helpful Links: |

soriasis is one of those conditions where
herbal remedies meet, and often exceed,
the poor results of more expensive glucocorticoids, a common
prescription. Calcipotriene ointment helps inhibit the
proliferation of keratinocytes, a cause of the rapid
turnover of skin cells experienced by psoriasis patients,
but it is hardly a cure. In India, psoriasis is extremely rare in those states where neem tree oil is used. We encourage those who suffer from psoriasis to read these pages thoroughly to become familiar with neem and how it works, not only with psoriasis, but with a wide range of dermatological disorders. Page three of our Neem Common Use Table illustrates the various skin disorders which have been successfully treated with neem for thousands of years. We invite you to study these tables.
